Daily Living Skills

Occupational Therapy

Daily living skills — also called self-care or adaptive skills — are the practical abilities children need to participate independently in everyday life. Dressing, toileting, grooming, eating with utensils, managing belongings, and following daily routines are all developmental milestones that some children need extra support to achieve.

Delays in daily living skills can stem from motor difficulties, sensory sensitivities, cognitive challenges, or a combination. For children with disabilities, building independence in these areas is often a key NDIS goal — and measurable progress in daily living skills directly supports plan reviews and continued funding.

Signs Your Child May Need Support

  • Difficulty dressing independently

  • Toileting challenges and delayed toilet training

  • Trouble with self-feeding or using utensils

  • Grooming tasks (brushing teeth, hair, washing)

  • Difficulty managing belongings at school

  • Trouble following daily routines independently

  • Needing more help than peers for self-care

  • Difficulty with sleep routines

Our Approach

Our OTs break complex daily tasks into manageable steps and teach them systematically using visual supports, backward chaining, and positive reinforcement. We work in your child's home environment so skills are learned in context. We collaborate with families to embed practice into natural daily routines — making therapy part of life, not separate from it.
