Fine Motor Skills

Occupational Therapy

Fine motor skills are the small, precise movements children need for handwriting, buttoning, cutting with scissors, using utensils, and countless other daily tasks. When these skills are delayed, it can affect confidence, independence, and school performance.

Fine motor development builds on a foundation of hand strength, finger dexterity, hand-eye coordination, and bilateral coordination (using both hands together). Delays can stem from low muscle tone, sensory processing difficulties, developmental conditions, or simply needing more targeted practice and support.

Signs Your Child May Need Support

  • Handwriting difficulties or avoidance

  • Trouble with buttons, zippers, and laces

  • Difficulty using scissors

  • Poor pencil grip or hand fatigue

  • Delayed self-feeding skills

  • Struggles with drawing, colouring, and craft

  • Difficulty with keyboards and devices

  • Avoidance of fine motor tasks

Our Approach

Our OTs use fun, motivating activities to build hand strength, dexterity, and coordination. Therapy is tailored to your child's interests — LEGO, art, cooking, and games are all therapeutic tools. We work closely with teachers to support handwriting and classroom participation, and provide home activities that fit into daily routines.
